Westip in aA smouldering grudge flamed out into a battle royal out on South Main street last Tuesday night when Archie Rogersand Giben Fergerson came together on the sidewalk in front of John WelPs residence.Rogers had leen on the police force for some time until last Saturday when he quit to follow the carpentering trade. It is said that threats had been made that if either one of the Rogers boy left the force, he would get a drubbing.Rogers and his wife were walking south out Main street when they were overtaken by Giben *ergerson and his brother Dave. Fergerson had been drinking and made some remarks that caused Rogers to turn about and protest. Whereupon, the fight started. Both of the brothers set upon Rogers. Although the larger of the boys was a half heavier than the ex-cop, he met them one at a time and sent them sprawling. They came at him again, and in this second round, Rogers stepped oft’ the sidewalk and sprained his ankle. Under this handicap he was being roughly handled when Joe Buckles called. uponthe brothers to lay oft'.They thereupon threatened Buckles and Buckles ran to a phone and called the police.George Wampler was the only policeman at the station house, but he deputized Marcus Booker and two ran to the scene of the fight, arriving there just as the Fergerson boys were leaving..Now it happens that Fergerson had made the remark that George Wampler couldn’t take him to the station house. When Wampler told him to come along, Fergerson refused. Without further ado Wampler knocked him down. Fergerson jumped to his feet and started for Wampler and the officer knocked him downPITheto ImirmirMetforladye in In-ir skies all game rest Sidenoon. i vo sides j tie that poff that bettering ■gh it isr bunchSide of jagain.Thereupon the younger brother broke away from Booker and jumped unto Wampler’s back. The brothers were soon subdued, however and locked up for the night. In court the next morning Giben admitted that he had been drinking, and without that probably no trouble would have started. The younger brother had not been drinking and had nothing to do with starting the trouble. Mayor Lawton fined Giben $15 and Dave $11. On the charge of attacking an officer, Dave was left off with sentence suspended.es at is bl a schimVimend*Ylt;slioygrevstrirowntralgrovyoutheyhosjSc
