(UPI) — A pistol-toting Nevada State Prison inmate, described as one of the most dangerous in the country, freea 50 hardened criminals from Death Row and top-security cells and took over a cellblock, holding three guards hostage through the night before releasing them today unharmed.Two of the guards werefreed by a rifle-finng SWATteam that ambushed the cellblock around 4 a.m.The third was finally released two hours later when uprising leader David Wayne surrendered, handing over a .25-caliber pistol to prison Superintendent Johnllansky, who negotiated forthe guards’10 hours for release.Prison Director Chuck Wolff, Jr., said the facility was secured at 6:30 a.m. and that the only guaranteegranted Wayne was that he would be able to have a visitfrom his girlfriend.Wayne, who just a few hours earlier had been acquitted on charges in another nostage-taking, asked for and was twice given doses of an anti-depressant drug, Demerol, by prison officials during the tense negotiations.Deputy Prison Warden Steve Robinson said Wayne wanted “assurances he won’t be killed.”The takeover, in which one inmate was stabbed and another beaten, was the sixth hostage incident at the prison in the past nine months and the third involving Wayne, described by a prison official as “one of the most dangerous men in the United States.”Wayne, 37, serving a 20-year term for attempted murder in a Reno, Nev., bar holdup, was being escorted from a shower around 8 p.m.Friday when he pulled a pistol, taking three guards captive.The guards were handcuffed and Wayne opened the cell doors on the section which houses Death Row inmates and other maximum security risks The inmates then started breaking windows and furniture in a 10-minutespree.During the all-night rampage, two inmates were beaten by the other convictsThey were identifed as John Sanders and Edward See, who had held a visiting gospel singing group hostage on Easter Sunday.
