The people of Corona who so liberally patronized “Hal the Heater” wbbn— - *•» •%. M. • ’ *he was here, will do well to peruse the following from, the Fresno Republican. The “Quaker Doctors” (Of which “Halthe Healer” was one) were branded by* • ^.. •• •••the Republican as fakirs and frauds. The doctors then sued, the paper foriibei‘ftrsirared the magnificent sum of ope dollar. The Republican, amoDg other things, says:“The piece de resistance is the famous Dr. Berry’s* Mineral Water Salts, evaporated from the waters of the mineral springs of California. It is advertised as the only known substance that will destroy the ‘microbe of nasal catarrh,’ and the assertion is made that the Quaker Brotherhood has purchasedthe springs and evaporating works at*great cost. Everyone of these statements is a direct falsehood. The salts are not evaporated from mineral waters, but are manufactured ^ in Portland. They consist almost entirely of a mixture of baking soda and borax, with a little common salt, and traces of a few other substances probably present as impurities.“In the consultation room, fraudulentboast is made that the Quaker Doctors can tell what disease a patient has ‘without asking a question’ and a free consultation-ticket is sold with each package of modicine. This is used as a bait to lure gudgeons to the consultation room of the ‘doctors.1 One of the company has usually some sort of a licence to practice medicine, but the others are also referred to as ^doctor,*Vand do not hesitate to practice both medicine and surgery.“In the consultation room, fradulent and dishonest diagnoses are made by a hasty and superficial examination, and victims who look promising are frightened by being told that they have serious diseases—commonly ‘threatened Bright’8 disease.’ They are thus inveigled into taking treatment, for which very exorbitant prices are charged, ranging from thirty or forty to many hundreds of dollars. The treatments consist, commonly, of a few bottles of medicine, and not of personal services or attention.*“The faudulent claim is also made that any Old sore, which does not heal of itself, is a cancer, and some such sores are removed by the application of a caustic plaster. The operation is simple and may be successful. The fraud consists in the reckless diagnosis and the extravagant charges.”*
