A BAND OF “ REGULATORS.”During the past two or three years great excitement has been caused in Indiana by an organized band of “ regulators,” known as the “ White Caps,” whose operations are usually confined to south-eastern Indiana, but Occasionally extend to other portions of the State. The following telegram from New Albany describes some of their recent proceedings:—The “White Caps” were out again last night on one of their ra Is. They first visited the residence of Peter Denton, near English, Crawford County, took his wife out and tied her to a tree, and gave her forty lashes on the back with hickory switches. They told her husband that she was whipped for conduct unbecoming a virtuous woman, and that if she did not reform they would come again and give her seventy-five lashes. They then rode into English, and, going to the residence of William H. Toney, took him out of bed, tied him to a telegraph-pole, and gave him one hundred lashes on the bare back with stout hickory switches. Toney was formerly a prominent and influent al citi en, but he became very intemperate and “tough,” and was considered dangerous to the community. He was ordered to immediately reform or expect another visit and double punishment from the “ White Caps.” The residence of A. J. Goodman, in the suburbs of English, was next visited. Goodman was told that he was a drunken brute, who compelled his wife to support the family by hard labour. They gave Goodman forty-eight hours in which to go to work and earn a support for his family, or take a hundred lashes. He was notified that if he was again seen visiting a saloon he would get the same punishment. The “ White Caps ” then went to the residence of James Pro, editor of the local paper, and left a note for him to publish in the next issue of his paper. In this note the “ White Caps ” say that any man found using money in the purchase of votes, treating with liquors to influence voters, or in any manner attempting to corrupt the ballot during the pending political canvass, will be taken from his home, tied to a tree, given two hundred lashes on the bare back, and for an aggravated offence of thischaracter three hundred lashes will be inflicted.11 * - * * —- - “ - -
