SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (UPI) — Five prisoners escaped from the Shelby County Jail early today but one was recaptured a short time later at Indianapolis.Chief Deputy Thomas Debaun said the five apparently made good their escape with the help of hacksaw blades smuggled into the jail.First, Debaun said, they cut a hole through a wall, cut the padlock off a door to reach an outside catwalk area, then cut two bars of an outside window, knocked out the mesh screen and fled. The five were housed in a downstairs bullpen. They were identified as James Gay Jr., 28, Fair land; Raymond Austin, 28, Morristown; Phillip Giles, 18, Waynesville, Ohio; Jefferson Griffin, 23, Rushville, and Thomas Wilson, 23, Indianapolis.Giles was held on vehicle taking charges, the others on burglary counts. Austin also faced auto banditry charges.Wilson was captured in Indianapolis, Debaun said. The escape occurred between 12:30 a.m. and 2 a.m., but was not discovered until several hours later, officials said.
