26 I aunt of Mrs. Prank Newbold.TRAGEDY DUE TO TOUGHSVETERAN NIGHT WATCH AT DELPHI FATALLY SHOT.August Scallon. the veteran night watch at Delphi, died Tuesday morning, as the result of a bullet fired into his brain by a Lafayette tough early Sunday morning. He was found lying in the street at Delphi with his brain oozing out and never regained consciousness. Charles Lawson, a Lafayette man with a criminal record, is supposed to have fired the fatal shot and he escaped arrest. He purchased cartridges of a Lafayette pawnbroker Saturday night. The gang came to Delphi on the head end of a Wabash passenger trapn shortly after midi-night Sunday morning, under the influence of liquor. Officer Scallon was trying to place them under arrest for raising a disturbance on the public square at 2 o’clock in the morning. The gang undertook to elude him and while chasing them the shot was fired j that caused his death. Several of the boys are in jail at Delphi, but the one most wanted is at large.Mr. Scallon had ■oeen serving as night watch for 15 years, and his faithfulness to duty and upright life had won the esteem of the community. The feling in Delphi has grown more intense since Scallon died and there is a determination on the part of the citizens to see that the perpetrator shall receive the full penalty of his miserable deed.
