Renfroe retrial under wayBIRMINGHAM - The second trial of the Rev. Harvey Renfroe, charged with the murder of his wife is under way with Dr Robert Johnson, former state toxicologist, expected to undergo lengthy cross examination today.The case opened Monday here after a change of venue was granted last summer. Renfroe, 50. was convicted of the second degree murder of 27-year-old Mrs Betty Culver Renfroe on Feb 21.1972 He was sentenced to 10 years However, the court of criminal appeals ordered a newtrial.Renfroe s new trial is expected to last throughFriday. Defense counsel hasindicated it will be Thursday before they will begin presenting their case Expected to appear on the witness stand are Coroner Jimmv Curtis, former state investigator Roy Riddle and former Talladega Sheriff LukeBrewer.Defense attornev LvndolW wBolton told the jury Monday that Renfroe was the victim of former Sheriff Luke Brewer.who at the time of the investigation into the strangulation death of Mrs. Renfroe. was under pressure to solve the case.Bolton charged that Renfroe was Brewer’s choice for the murderer because the minister had married a woman 19 years his junior Renfroe was a Congregational Holiness minister and part-time used car salesmanThe accused's first wife and his subsequent marriage to Betty Culver Renfroe allegedly caused some difficulties with Renfroe s grown daughter, according to reports In his opening remarks.
