More T ezak accusations come out during hearingBy Tamara SharmanFormer Will County Coroner RobertTezak plotted to kill a co-conspirator in an arson-for-profit scheme, shook down a widow for insurance money and threatened a tax activist, witnesses testified Monday in federal court.Those allegations came on the first day of Tezak’s sentencing hearing on federal arson charges. U.S. District Judge Wayne R. Andersen recessed the hearing until June 24.The once-influential Tezak, garbed in a dark blue prison jumpsuit, sat calmly during the court proceedings, often writing on notebook paper handed to him by one of his lawyers.Sheldon Shannon testified that Tezak,a multimillionaire entrepreneur, asked him to arrange the murder of a coconspirator and potential witness against Tezak while Shannon and Tezak were housed in a segregation unit of the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago during October 1993.Tezak drew a map, which was displayed in court, to allow the killers to easily find former labor official Kenneth Floyd, according to Shannon.Floyd was one of Tezak’s coconspirators in his admitted arson-for-profit activities in 1987.
