EUREKA RIVER((By The Gazette’s Correspondent)Eureka River, May 8.—It is not my intention to enter into aIcontroversy with Mr. L’Heureux,Ie : Indian agent, in respect to the'• I conditions existing last winter a-^ I mong the Indians on the Reserve 1 here, but, when one is publicly ac-■Jcused of writing inaccuracies it is ■ | necessary that the whole truth be ' I published even if it may hurt the feelings of Mr. L’Heureux to have *! those conditions made public.I I had an idea that an Indian Agent would have a record of all livestock, etc., held by the Indians of his agency. Rut apparently this is not so. Mrs. Mosquito unfortunately did lose twenty-two horses, and for the purposes of the agent’s records I may say she has yet six head left. Chief Lowelost several and has at least fourhead left,—but why continue? The facts are evident to all the residents here. The principal involved is simply this, that the Indians are being penalized because they have not a white man’s view-point of preparing for the future. If a white child were wilful or disobedient, is it the agent’s view that the child should be half starved aspunishment? The figures quoted by the agent are very illuminating, but figures will not fill an empty stomach, or silence the cries of children for food. This was an exceptionally difficult vear for the Indians to make any money to add to their stock )f bacon and flour, and under ex-1 ceptional conditions exceptional ‘! remedies should be used. I do not j blame the agent, as likely he has to follow particular rules and re-I gulations laid flown by the Department of Indian affairs. Apologies, figures, or sarcasm will not* help in alleviating conditions such* as existed last winter, and my only wish is that the agent will make representations to the proper heads of the Department so that such a state of affairs will not be illowed in another season.Duncan Campbell Sr., returned home last week after having spent over two months at Fairview and Waterhole. Whilst out he contracted for and successfully completed the demolition of the old Royal bank building at Waterhole.Wm. Somers, who was working at Shaw’s mill, had the misfortune to get some hot babbit in his eye, but happily he sustained no permanent injury.Frank and C. St hwert returned on Saturday after having buried their father at the Waterhole cemetery. Mr. Schwerdt died a few days ago of pneumonia.
