II. Halsey was the complaining witness. The facts as brought cut-in the case were that for sevemt years but especially the last few months it has been the habit of a gang of boys to congregate at the Normal school upon every public occasion •and make a disturbance, doing various annoying and -disorderly acts and destroying the flower beds, 'breaking windows, etc. On Thursday night, during the reception to the students of Normal university, the* usual disturbance occurred. Much noise was made and suddenly, without warning, the electric lights in the school went out. A watch was stationed and when the offense was repeated a chase was made and one of the boys was caught. President Halsey took the lad to his office and questioned him. I-.ec Hanley gave his ntuie as Harry George, residing on Walnut street. He stated that there were two other ’boys with him. The patrol wagon was called and the boys spent the night at the police station. When the case was called this morning Mr. Halsey related the facts as above, and expressed regret that it 'had become his duty to perform so unpleasant a task.Judge Goss asked the boy the question:Bid you turn out the lights as Mr, Halsey says?”The boy replied: Yes, sir.'*The next query of 'the Judge was: “Who was with you?The boy’s answer was:Bud Thompson and Harold Bemis.” Judge Goss expressed regret that the others were not arrested also but stated thae nevertheless ‘he should punish the one who had been brought before him. He delivered a scathing lecture that a boy seventeen years of age should be guilty of such an act and advised him that the charge preferred against him was lenient compared to the state law which would apply in such cases. He fined the boy $3 and costs which his mother, Mrs. Michael Hanley, paid. The court promised to give the lad the full extent of the law if the offense is repeated-After the case was over the mother Indignantly scored Mr. Halsey for singling her boy out for an example and demanded that others be arrested aiso anu not be allowed to escape punishment because their families arc influential and wealthy.
