Laughead was arrested at the drug store of George Reiss, on Fourth street, near Chestnut, by Deputy Sheriff Grimminger, about six o’clock last evening, on a warrant from the grand jury, charging him with procuring an abortion on Cecelia Devlin, commonly known as Celia Michaels. The indictment was returned yesterday, and Deputy Sheriff Grimminger visited the doctor’s residence, at Second and Chestnut, in the afternoon, but found that Laughead was in Illinois. Later he returned, and was arrested as above stated. He gave bond for $500, with Lee Goodman and Simon Hirschler as sureties, and was released. Dr. Laughead denies th$ serious charge preferred against him, characterizing it as spite work, and announcing his ability to establish his innocence. The indictment on which the arrest was made is a very lengthy one, consisting of four counts, in which the details of the alleged abortion are entered into very minutely. The offence is charged to have taken place on the 19th of December, 1881, the abortion not being necessary to save the life of theprosecuting witness, Cecilia Devlin. This indictment is but another chapter in the affair brought out by the suit against Laughead for breach of promise and seduction, in which the Devlin girl appears as plaintiff. The breach of promise and seduction case was brought in the Superior court sometime ago, and has been set down for trial before Judge Scott on a change of venue. Dr. Laughead some time ago was married, and the actions of Miss Devlin but strengthens the truth of the saying that “hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.”leased him.“Put themagain spoke 1 the suit of bh The nmrdere] plaid jacket ^and reachedcoat on the c himself, and c erto horror lighted up v know,” he sai me know.
