Iron theft probenetsarrestsA series of thefts in Iron County has apparently been solved by the Hurley Police Department.According to officer Ken Colassaco, the probe started to unravel with the investigation into last week’s breaking and entering at the J.E. Murphy High School.John R. Baron, 19, Montreal, Wis., has been charged with that incident in which several vending machines were broken into and the money stolen and calculators of undetermined value were reported missing.Colassaco said in the course of the investigation, Baron was connected to two missing snowmobiles and Friday was charged with stealing a snowmobile from Montreal Jan. 17,1982 that belongs to Smeeth Sporting Center, Ironwood. He was also charged in the theft of another snowmobile from Montreal Feb 6, 1982, belonging toNATIONAL FOREST TIMBERFOR SALENATIONAL FOREST TIM BER SALE, OTTAWA NATIONAL FOREST, SILVER LEDGE SALE located within Sections 23, 24, 25 24, T45N R35W, iron County, Michigan. Sealed bids will be received by the Forest Supervisor, Iron wood, Michigan, at 2:00 p.m., local time at place of bid opening on June 16, 1982, for an estimated 1,858 MBF of timber marked or otherwise designated for cutting. The estimated volumes and minimum ac ceptable bid rates are: 154 MBF of balsam fir sawtimber at $1.00 per MBF, 15 MBF of tamarack sawtimber at $20.22 per MBF; 278 MBF of spruce sawtimber at $18.35 per MBF; 114 MBF of red and white pine sawtimber at $32 38 per MBF; 25 MBF of paper birch sawtimber at $51.76 per MBF, 21 MBF of aspen sawtimber at $7.81 per MBF; 185 Ccf of mixed hardwood pulp wood at $0 60 per Ccf; 792 Ccf of balsam fir pulpwood at $0 60 per Ccf; 38 Ccf of tamarack pulp wood at $4 65 per Ccf, 614 Ccf of spruce pulpwood at $3.10 per Ccf; 42 Ccf of pine pulpwood at $16 61 per Ccf; 305 Ccf of aspen pulpwood at $1 04 per Ccf. The right to reiect any and all bids isJohn Linehan, Montreal.Bond for Baron was set at $2,500 and has not been posted.Earl H Gingery, 50, Oma, has been charged with receiving and concealing stolen property in connection with the theft of the two machines and has been released on a $5,000 signature bond, Colassaco said.Two juveniles are also being questioned concerning the theft.The snowmobile arrests led police to the arrest of George M. Stella, 19, 213 Cary Rd., Hurley, Colassaco said, for a break-in at the residence of James Dapra, 106 Fourth Ave. S., Hurley, inDecember of 1981. Bond,set at $1,500, has not beenposted.Colassaco said theHurley Police worked with the Iron County Sheriff’s Department and district attorney Paul Sturgul to contact officials inMilwaukee County toquestion two subjects in connection with thesnowmobile theft.Friday, Colassaco, sheriff’s deputy James Wicklund, and Hurley Police officer Ed Clemens went to Milwaukee, questioned the two suspects with the assistance of Detective Frank Cole of theMilwaukee Police, andrecovered the two missing machines, Colassaco said. He said one snowmobile is still intact and the other in pieces.
