Memorial service to honor fallen officersBy Kayla ReganThe Hutchinson News kregan@hutchnews. comOn Friday, the Reno County Sheriff’s Office is honoring fallen members of law enforcement.That includes five sheriff’s deputies and policemen in Hutchinson and Reno County’s history, 251 statewide and 21,700 in America since 1791, the Officer Down Memorial Page states.According to the nonprofit site dedicated to honoring fallen members of law enforcement, globally anofficer dies in the line of duty every six minutes. That alone, said Reno County Sheriff Randy Henderson, is reason to gather in honor of their memories.It’s a way that we not only say thanks to the officers that made the ultimate sacrifice, but a way for thanking their families,” he said.Among those remembered Friday will be Reno County Undersheriff Edward Metz, who died in 1901 when he was pushed under a train; Deputy Thomas Simpson Fowler, who was shot and killed by a burglary suspectin 1911; Officer Reason Sherman Monroe, who was fatally shot nine times while investigating a family disturbance in 1924; Police Lt. Shelby Comstock, who was shot and killed after stopping a vehicle in 1956; and Officer Kenneth M. Kennedy, who was shot by a bystander while investigating liquor crimes at a fried chicken restaurant in 1972.Henderson said the threat of being shot or injured in the line of duty is always on the minds of law enforcement officers, but it can never be so strong that it keeps themH-from performing their jobs.If an officer ever tells me he’s not afraid, then I worry about him,” Henderson said.Henderson will begin with opening statements Friday at 11 a.m. in front of the Law Enforcement Center, 201W. First Ave. Also slated to speak are Pastor Willard Stafford with an invocation and guest speaker CoL Ernest Garcia with the Kansas Highway PatroL Sheriff’s Detective Chris Massingill will play taps.In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be in the Veterans Room in the basement of the courthouse.
