Californian confessesDid he kill at Ellsworth?ELLSWORTH — Former Marine Billy Lee Chadd, a man sentenced Friday to die for the torture sex murders of two California women, has told police that he killed a man while hitchhiking near Ellsworth in June of 1974.However, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office in Ellsworth said Friday there were no reports of homicides or missing persons in the area at that time. He said he had conferred with San* Diego police and had sent a map of Ellsworth County to the man so he could pinpoint where the killing took place.Chadd told San Diego police he had met his supposed victim while hitchhiking outside of Ellsworth. According to Chad, he argued with the man, then hit him with a rock and threw him, his dog and a duffel bag over the bridge into a creek. Chadd was able to identify the creek on a map, but the sheriffs spokesman said no bodies have been found there.Chadd has also confessed to the killing of a homosexual in Las Vegas several years ago but was tried only on charges of killing the two California women. The panel deliberated one hour and 45 minutes in the penalty phase of the trial before returning its verdict.Superior Court Judge Earl Maas Jr. set June 6 for formal sentencing. The sentence will automatically be appealed to the California Supreme Court.Chadd was smiling as the verdict was read. The jurors’ faces were grave. The former Marine orderly at Balboa Naval Hospital, had confessed the slayings of Patricia Franklin, 30, a secretary at Scripps Clinic, on July 26, 1974, and that of Linda Hewitt, 28, of National City, on Feb. 15, 1978.Both women were raped before they were stabbed to death.“I had a gun and went gunning,” Chadd wrote in a jailhouse manuscript called “Dark Secrets” that was read to the jury. “The ways of torture that I called to mind would have done justice to Marquis de Sade.“I fully expect a death penalty for my crimes. I don’t ask for forgiveness, just understanding.”
