2 Life Terms For MosleyRENSSELAER — An escaped convict who killed a Porter Counly woman and her daughter was sentenced to two life terms today by Jasper Circuit Court Judge Michael Kanne. The case was venuedfrom Porter County last January.Riley B. Mosley Jr., 29, Indianapolis, was also sentenced to a 21-year term for the rape of the mother. In announcing the concurrent sentences; Judge Kanne recommended to the Slate Parole Board and to the Office of the Governor that no parole be granted and no leniency shown for Mosley;Mosley pleaded guilty to two counts of first degree murder and a rape charge April 26. A charge of commission of a felony .while armed was dropped by the Porter Counly Proseculor’s office in exchange for the guilty pleas to the other three charges. Mosley is represented by Porter County public defender James Tsoutsouris.Victims of the crime were Marian Napierala, 53, ami her daughter, Gayle, 19, Pine Township.Mosley was a house boy at tlie home of prison guard Lawrence Schopmeyer, as an honor prisoner at the Indiana work farm near the Napierala home, when he took a gun and car keys from the Schopmeycr home and walked away last Dec. 26. Mosley had been serving a term since January 1972 for robbery at knifepoiuL of $200from an Indianapolis restaurant.In making his guilty plea, Mosley lolri the court he went to the Stanley Napicrala farmhouse after a car stopped and backed up as he waiked along a road and he though the driver might be a policeman or someone who was going to call the police.When Mrs. Napicrala answered his knock at the door but refused to lei him use the telephone, he kicked the door open and went in, Mosley continued.A son, Mark, 11, in the basement at the time, escaped when he heard Mosley brcuk in, and alerted police.First officer on the scene was stale trooper Guy Barth, who said when he arrived at about 3 p.m., no one answered his knock on the door. Barth said he then lariked through the small window in the door and saw Mrs. Napierala standing there with a gun pointed to her head. Barth radioed for assistance after the woman told him, “He'll kill us all. Please leave.Indiana State Police Del. Sgt. Lee Cnlc arrived at 4 p.m. and called Mosley from a neighbor’s house. The officer reported that Mosley threatened to shoot his hosLages if the police came close to the house, and asked fora car to drive to Oklahoma.,l[ kept asking for a car, but they wouldn't gel me a car; they thought I wanted to take the hostages with me, Mosley said in court during his guilty plea. He said two of the women In the house also asked the police to give him a car.The convict also testified that he forced Mrs. Napierala into the bedroom and raped her. Mrs. Napierala and Gayle were shot when Mosley later tried (u rape Gayle, and the mother tried to get his gun from him.Another daughter, Cynthia, 17, escaped during the shootings by running down a hallway from the bedroom, and slipping Lhrough a trap door in the bathroom into the basement.Mosley told the court he tried to then shoot himself after killing the two women, but that the catch broke on the revolver. The two women were shot with a .36 calibre pistol, Mosley also had a .22 calibre rifle when he finally gave himself up to police at 19:30 p.m. He nsked officers to shoot him as he emerged from the home, but finally put the guns down and was handcuffed by police.
