Kaylor ruled the deaths of Riley Jack Maynard III, 26, and his 18-year-old wife, Nancy, were caused by pellets from Maynard’s own .12 gauge shotgun.Maynard killed his wife and then himself after a midnight gunbattle with more than 40 law enforcement officers early Wednesday morning.The incident reportedly began at about noon Tuesday when Wanda Stauffer and her two sons, ages 2 and 4, were abducted by Maynard from the front yard of their Lima home at gunpoint.9 Vi-Hour Ordeal Mrs. Stauffer told authorities Maynard forced her to drive her car through Cridersville, Wapa-koneta and finally to Logan County during the nine and one-half hours until she was re-leased shortly before 10 p.m. near the Huntsville home of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Evans where the shooting occurred.While stopped in a drive-in in Wapakoneta, Mrs. Stauffer left a note saying she had been abducted and gave a description of the car.Mrs. Joseph Elkins, owner of the B and K Drive In on North Dixie Highway in Wapakoneta said the Stauffer car was parked behind the root beer stand sometime around 3 p.m. “in full view of the restrooms. She said the woman asked for the restroom key. “She was in there a long time,'1 Mrs. Elkins said.band was not willing to grant it, police said. She did not receive any medical attention police said.Logan County Sheriff De-Weese Skidmore said his department was aware Maynard and his wife had marital problems and deputies had been dispatched to the Evans home just last Sunday.When Mrs. Stauffer was released in Huntsville, authorities say she ran to a local gas station where the attendent called Huntsville Police Chief James Bennett on a Citizens Band radio. Bennett then notified the Logan County sheriff and the state highway patrol.The gunbattle followed and ended at about 12:15 a.m. Thursday w he n authorities burst into the Evans home and discovered the bodies of Maynard and his wife sprawled in an upstairs bedroom.Authorities say the origin of the shotgun Maynard used in the murder-suicide is still undetermined, although they believe a small caliber pistol was used t he abduction of Mrs. Stauffer.Maynard’s body is now at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bel-lefontaine awaiting air transportation to Mt. Va.Bone Found After Owner Wrecks BikeA 20-year-old Van Wert man, Jerry Hessel of Rt 2, was seriously injured in a car-motor-cycle accident about 3:40 p.m. Wednesday in the 800 block of East State Road.Hessel was listed in serious condition today in Lima Memorial Hospital’s intensive care unit where he is being treated for a compound fracture of the left leg, suffered when his motorcycle struck the rear of an auto.Bath Rescue firemen treated the injured man for about 15 minutes at the accident scene and then rushed him to the hospital where it was discovered that a four-inch piece of bone was missing.Allen sheriff deputies searched the scene, found the piece of bone and rushed it to the hospital.Deputies said the accident remains under investigation. Hessel apparently was following an auto driven by Donald Goodman Jr., 17, of 1460 E. State Rd. which slowed to make a turn.
