Staunton, Va., May 8.—Two persona are dead and two others arc believed to be fatally injured as the result of a shooting scrape this afternoon on Christian's Creek, about three miles south of this city, following a crap game earlier in the day. The dead are Perry Hoy and Cletis Higgs, 'the latter being the seventeen-year-old son of Edward Higgs. The wounded are Edward Higgs and Abe Hoy. The shooing was done by Arch Brown.Brown and Abe Hoy, who are understood to have been drinking, quarreled this morning while throwing dice, but parted and went their respective ways without any attempt at violence. This afternoon a crowd gathered at the home of .lames Sheets, a neighbor, Abe and Perry Hoy, who are brothers, being among those present. Brown came to the house about 2 o’clock, armed with a “pump” shot gun, all five chambers of which were loaded with buckshot. He immediately opened Are, shooting at Abe Hoy, but missed bis mark and sent a shot through Perry Hoy’s hat. At the next crack of the gun Perry Hoy fell dead, shot through the breast Cletis Higgs was the next to fall. The child was struck in the neck. The little boy’s father, a man of considerable age, was frightfully wounded also, being bit in the side,near the kidney.Dashing through the house in pursuit of Abe Hoy, Brown came upon his man at last and shot him four times, putting seven buckshot into his body. Hoy’s wounds are scattered. Two or three of the wounds are believed to be fatal, and it is thought that the wounds of Higgs must also result in death.Perry Hoy was 21 years old. Abe Hoy is about 25.After the shooting Brown came to this city and surrendered himself. He is well known here, where he has been a defendant in police court on one or two occasions.It is said that after Brown quarreled with Abe Hoy he went to the home of a man named Irvine, for whom he worked, and there procured and ^loaded the gun with which the shooting was done, saying he meant to use it to kill dogR which had been after the sheep.
