Will and Jesse Hill had just left him and he had his back to them doing some work at his desk, he had his back to the window from which he could have seen the shooting. The shots in the close vicinity startled him, stating that at first he thought some one was shooting off fire crackers, but jumping up saw a man fall in the court house yard, before he could get outside, F.x-Sheriff Hill and his brother came into the oftice and turned over their firearms giving themselves up. They made no attempt to escape and while the sheriff was investigating the case they remained in the office un-guarded, speaking to numerous of their friends who came up with the excited crowd, but refusing to talk any about the shooting. Sheriff Hill asked for a cigarette and lighting it calmly said that he did not come to town expecting trouble or, he would have avoided it if he had] known. He stated that he had no idea that Wright was to be in town until he met him face to face when coming from the sheriff's office and then the shooting took place.Jim Pierce Wright is a well known character in this section of the country, he was generally recognized as a “bad' man to get mixed up with and as a general rule he was avoided. He served a term of ten years in the state penitentiary for being implicated in some cattle trouble and since that time has lived in this vicinity, spending most of his time on the ranch. His bodv was removed towthe undertaking establishment ofJohn Converv where the doctors¥are holding an investigation.F.x Sheriff Will T. Hill is a native of LaSalle county although he is very well known to everyone in this vicinity and of good character although very excitable. Since his term as Sheriff of La Sa Salle he has returned to ranching and spends the majority of his time about Cofcullu. He came to this
