wnne Guardians of the People’s Peace and Property Watched a Show at the Theatre.A strange man last evening about seven o’clock persuaded four-year-old Mary Beatty, daughter of William Beatty of 313 South Third street, to accompany him from, the merry-go-round at Jefferson and Main to the woods west of the canal. The child was recognized and her mother informed. Members of the family pursued the wretch and he was forced to drop the child.Mrs. Judson C. Kreger who resides opposite the Beatty family first saw the man passing through the alley, before he got possession of the child. She next saw him walk north on the west side of Third street past the Beatty home wi:h the child. She thought it was srange and at once ran across the street and informed the mother.At the merry-go-round a large number of children, including the Beatty child had been attracted. The man took the child or his lap and talked with her. He then started south leading her by the hand. He turned west on Madison street and north again on Third street. The little girl as they passed h'W home, said “I live there.” The man said, “never mind, when we get back I will give you a quarter and a ride on the merry-go-round.” He turned west on Jefferson street and as he passed the home of Frank Blender. Mrs. Blender heard him say to the little girl. “You are my best girl.” and the little girl said ‘•'yes.”He walked on Jefferson across the canal and through the lumber yard of the Hawks furniture factory, past the falls and started for the woods. At this point ho was overtaken by Marie and Jess a Beatty, two of the older sisters of the little one he was attemping to carry off. He heard them coming and said to the little one, “There comes your mother, lets run.” He final'y dropped the child and ran south. He was seen at the Hawks furnituro factory by Harry Manahan and farther south on the canal bank by Lloyd Stuart and a Peffly boy. Tim police were called and Officers Santschi and Cobbuni responded, the}- made a short search along the other side of the canal bank. They found no one and rejoined Marshal Banta at the show at The Irwin.Marie Beatty rode on a bicycle to the Plymouth avenue bridge over the canal and says the man started to cross it but turned back and jumped a fence.The man was about five feet ten and dark, with a mustache. He was unshaven and wore a dark suit and a broad brimmed light hat, the crown not crushed.At nine o’clock Marshal Banta decided to personally investigate the Beatty matter and left the show and went to the child’s home to learn the story. He returned to the business portion of the city, at once and found a lady’s bicycle that some one had left out. He was unable to find the owner.The Goshen Democrat a that C. G.
