Dan Carnahan, 66,* Found Beaten, Dead In Washington Home.WASHINGTON, Ind. — A pre-liminary charge of murder was filed Saturday against four men, two of them frpm Bicknell, in the justice of the peace court of Ernest Rapey.eAfter a plea of innocent by the four, they were held in the Daviess county jail without bond to await the special call of the grand jury this week. No date has been set for the grand jury call.Pleading innocent to the charge were Freeman Underhill, 67,' his half-brother, Andrew Underhill, 51, both of Bicknell; Edgar Enlow, 54, Washington; and* Chester Beard, 29, Tell City.The group of four was held for investigation of the fatal beating of Dan Carnahan. 66, a retired cOal miner and veteranr^of the first World War.The * ex-miner was found injured at his west side shack. He later died. Daviess Coroner H. O. Norton termed death due to a cerebral hemorrhage^ following a blow on thehead.On Tavern TourPolice Chief Joe Cosby advised that the men said they had visited taverns in Bicknell and Washington before going to the shack of Carnahan.Carnahan formerly lived in the Wheatland area.Freeman Underhill recently* served a 60-day term on the penal farm on the charge of contributing to the delinouency of a minor. It was determined that he had serve^L beers to a person under legal age.1Underhill has a suit pending against the city of Washington. The suit developed after he stepped in a manhole about a year ago. The damage suit had not'been settled.Authorities at Bicknell said the ‘ four men involved were in that city Friday night. The officials added that no police record is against any of the men there. Vincennes police files also carry no record of the four, it was reported.
