KITE—SON WOUNDEDWHEN HE ATTEMPTED TOWREST PI8TOL FROM OLDERMAN’S ASSAILANT — LITTLEHOPE OF RECOVERY GIVEN,UW (Special To Dally Record?f Shenandoah City, May 6.—Becausehe was refused a drink of whiskey,John Lucas this evening shot andprobably fatally injured T. C. (Polly)Kite, a bartender in Printz’s saloon.The injury was inflicted after Luca3had attempted to shoot Kite’s father, Henry J. Kite, and while the son was trying to take the gun away from him. The bullet entered young Kite’s neck Just above the collar bone, plowed through the left lung and lodged in the left shoulder blade. Lucas was placed under arrest and will be takento the Page county jail at Luray to-1morrow morning to await the result of Kite’s injuries.The shooting occurred about 8:10 o'clock. A short time before, Lucas, who had been drinking considerably during the day, entered the saloon and asked for more whiskey. Young Kite told him he had had enough and refused to sell him any more. Muttering threats, Lucas left the saloon and went to the second floor of the building. where he lived with hia family, and secured a 38-calibre blue-steel revolver.In a few minutes he returned to the saloon and again demanded a drink. I When he was again refused, he is alleged to have threatened to shoot the younger Kite, who was alone in the saloon with his father, Henry J. Kite. The elder Kite interfered and advised Lucas to go back upstairs before he got into trouble.Becoming enraged at the older man, Lucas drew his pistol and was in the act of tiring, when Kite knocked the virrel of the weapon into the air. Theullet went into the ceiling. Seeing j be danger to his father, ‘‘Polly’’ Kitehurried from behind the bar and grappled with Lucas. In the mix-up that followed, Lucas fired two shots, one of which took effect in the young man's neck, the other going 4hto the wall. The father then knocked Lucas down and wrenched the revolver from his hand.Kite was removed to his father'shome a few doors away, where Drs. Hock and Shiiler examined his injuries. Ho was bleeding profusely from the mouth. Dr. W. A. Koontz, of drove Hill, was summoned by telephone and arrangements were made for an operation tonight. The condition of the injured man is precarious and little hope is entertained for bis recovery.Lucas was taken to his home over the saloon. The elder Kite struck hint a severe blow in the face and a ring, which he wore, cut the flesh. A •sician, who examined him later, said he was not badly hurt. Officers titan placed him under arrest.Kite is about 25 or 26 years of age and is unmarried. His assailant isabout 39 years old, is married jind has several children. He is a son of J.B. Lucas, of this place, and is the owner of the building in phich Printz’s saloon is located.
