Woman, 88, Robbed; Police Join Searcht •City of Manitowoc police have joined law enforcement' authorities from other areas of the state in attempting to halt an apparent ring of thieves which struck Wednesday at Manitowoc.According to a Manitowoc Police Department report, the southside residence of a 88-year-oid woman was robbed of more than $1,000 in cash and an endorsed federal government check for $60 Wednesday afternoon.In another incident, an elderly northside woman reported to police that she was scared by two suspicious acting women in her home. 1Capt. Robert Schmidt of the MPD said his department had received teletype messages from Outagamie County authorities who received similar complaints earlier in the week.In each case, the suspects are described as dark com-plexioned women, some of whom speak in broken English and one who appears to be pregnant.The southside home of the 88-year-old Manitowoc woman apparently was entered through an unlocked door between the hours of 2 and 4:30 p.m. Police said a chair which | had been iodged against the doorknob apparently was forced back because it was J placed on a rug. ■'A neighbor told police she I observed three women wearing tennis shoes and who looked like ‘'gypsies” enter the home shortly after it was vacated by the resident. The trio, the neighbor said left the dwelling15 or 20 minutes later.Upon investigation, police discovered that the sum of $1,000 was stolen from a metal box placed under a bedroom dresser and the check was taken from the pantry area. Another signed government check for $144 apparently was overlooked by the thieves.The other incident was reported to police at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday.According to a 70-year-old northside woman, a young dark complexioned woman knocked on her front door asking for used clothing for a religious organization and, later without being invited inside she entered the dwelling.Once inside, the intruder said she felt ill and asked for a glass of water. She then asked forsome sugar to place in thewater, the Manitowoc woman said, and another women, apparently pregnant, walked into the house.The Manitowoc woman then became scared and summoned her husband by motioning through a window. When the husband, who had been working in the back yard, entered the home the two intruders left, the report stated.
