Mfotorpolicemen on Guard at Canton Workhouse Kidnapped by Outlaws.CLASH WITH POSSE OF POLICE AND CITIZENSDesperate Battle Paged inWoods Until Last of Gang Was Down—Two Dying.CANTON, May 5.—Three men are dt'ad, two others cannot live, two more are badly injured and John II. Stevenson, known all over the country as “Oklahoma Slim,* and wanted in half a dozen cities for bank anil postal robberies, including the famous Bedford. O., bank crime, is under double guard in Stark county workhouse today as the result of tho most sensational gun battle e\er staged jn Stark county,“Sliai’s gang, which had plotted to effect his release from the work house, was entirely wiped out by tho Canton police, deputy sheriffs and a posse of citizens who joined the buttle following the kidnapping of Motorcycle Officer John Wise, of tho Canton police force by the gang. The buttle took place in a woods five miles north of Canton late yesterday afternoon after three automobiles loaded with Canton police ami deputy sheriffs surrounded the gang who were carrying Wise away with them.Member of Killed.Ralph lioffe. 2S. Canton contractor. who was a member of the posse, and an unidentified member of the gang were killed outright in the battle. Joe Clapo. whose address is given as 105 George street. Buffalo, died during the night in AitUmau hospital.The other wounded are Harry Harper, address given as Cleveland and George Braincr. address 105 George street. Buffalo, two members of the gang who are not expected to live; Patrolman Jesse Yogley. shot through the leg and Robert-Boston, Canton member of the posse, shot through the foot. -*'Oklahoma Slim” is serving a sis months' sentence in the local workhouse. having been captured here several weeks ago. The sentence was imposed to give local authorities opportunity to connect him with some of the robberies that have occurred here and in the county.
