in Whitley murder caseBy MARY BRANHAM Staff WriterIt's doubtful that anyone will be tried for the 1986 shooting death of a Whitley County man.Capital murder charges against Donald Glen “Lardo Lyons of McCreary County were dropped Monday. Commonwealth Attorney Allen Trimble said proof in the case against Lyons was not something that could support a conviction.The indictment against Lyons was the second one dropped in the case in which four people were charged with the July 1986 shooting death of Greg Hill of the Mulberry community.Charges against Larry D. HarvU-le, 39, olRockholds were dropped in January. Harville was indicted on charges he paid Lyons to have two people kill Hill.Tne cases against the local men were brought about by confessions of the two people in California who have admitted to shooting Hill. Cynthia Lynn “Sinful Coffman, 26, admitted in a statement to California authorities that she and James Gregory Marlow. 32, killed someone in Kentucky.The problem we're running into is the case was based to a large extent on the confessions of these two people, said Trimble.Coffman's statements to police implicated Lyons, according to Trimble. But Coffman changed her statements in testimony before a San Bernardino, Calif, criminal court Jury, he said.It put us in a situation where we couldn't present a case to the jury. said Trimble. Six men, including Harville, were indicted in the murder in October 1986. All six indictments were later dropped.Officials seemed to have a new lead in the case when Coffman made her statements to California authorities in October 1987. The most recent indictments were returned at that time.Jerome Hill, father of the victim, said the case has turned out as he expected.“I never did expect anything to be done, really. Hill said. He had not heard the case against Lyons was dropped, but said he expected it.“They had two cases this time. When they dismissed the first one, I knew they'd have to dismiss the other one, said Hill.But the case is not resolved in Trimble's mind.“The thing that bothers me is why these two people selected this boy to kill him, said Trimble. “It is our feeling that someone Inspired or prompted that type of killing. Proving it is another thing.Trimble said if any additional proof is found, the case could be reopened.Hill was killed July 7, 1986 and his body was found in a cemetery near the Mulberry Church by an area resident who was trailrlding along an old strip mine the next day.Autopsy reports at the time showed Hill died of a gunshot wound.
