Xichols.Zionsville was the scene of a horse whipping escapade last Saturdayevening just at dusk. The subject was Alexander Hogan, an old soldier who has attained to his three score and ten but who if reports be true has yet some of the animal vigor of youth. The weapon, a short buggy whip about six feet long, was wielded by1 Miss Florence Nichols, daughter of Ol H. Nichols. Mr. Nichols was out i. ** huckstering last Thursday and had with him his three grandchildren— two little boys and a little girl, the latter about nine years of age. Mr. Hogan was overtaken on the road and permitted to get into the wagon to ride and there being no room in front he was put in the back part with the 1 little girl. It is reported that here -was the origin of the old man’s trouble, the little girl reporting when she arrived at home that he had sought to make himself too familiar with her person apd an examination showed her underclothing torn. This so incensed the aunt of the little girl that she wanted to go at once to the home of Mr. Ilogan and horsewhip him on his own premises, but was pre-*vailed on by Mr. Nichols to -defer the matter. On Friday, fuel was added to the fire raging in the Nichols hofne when the old man was discovered loitering about the premises apparently withno purpose unless he harbored the hellish desire to accomplish what he had undertaken the day before, but no opportunity was afforded and he went away, and nothing more was seen of him until Saturday about 6:30 o'clock, when the little girl who had been sent to the barn on the rear of the lot to see if the cows had come, came running back to the house and . announced that Hogan was coming down to the barn. Mr. Nichols was1* informed of the fact and the girl was told to return to the barn with the assurance that she should not be hurt. This she did and Hogan advanced upon her. At the same time Miss Nichols went out a side gate and slipped down side alley toward the barn and i;i a moment began to lay on stripes with the whip she had concealed in the folds of her dress. As he felt the cutting blows he winced and started to run, but realizing that this was not a ready way to dispose of his assailant who was following closely on his heels and all the time striking with the might of a woman infuriated by the thoughts of a heinous crime, he turned upon her as if to disarm her. Just at this time Mr. Nichols who had gone out another way. cried for his daughter to clinch and hold him until he could arrive and he would make short work of him.At this. Hogan started to make the run of his life, going north to the first street. Miss Nichols following and keeping up her cowhiding at every step. Here he made his escape and took refuge in his home two squares north, prostrated from excitement and the remorse of a seared con science. The occurrence has been the subject of much talk during the past week and fears are entertained that Mr. Nichols may yet do some violence should he meet Hogan.Mr. Hogan is a painter by trade*v has a nice family and until this episode, has borne a good name. He was always quite talkative but considered harmless, and his friends, especially among the grand army boys feel greatly the humiliation of the occurence. It is.understood that he denies having any evil intentions toward the girl. . _Court Miscellany.mi
