Oh, yes, people have heard a lot about it In this “city within a city,”But they don’t think much of the Idea.Hamtramck Is a city of 60,000— a separate municipality—within the city of Detroit. It has no railroad station, no hospitals and no hotels. It Is made up principally of mlienborn and children at alien-born.POLICE CHIEF FUGITIVE—Hamtramck’e chief of police, Mark Beriinger, Is a fugitive from Justice. State oolice arrested him for violation of the dry law and locked him up in his own Jail, but Berllnger’s subordinates let him out when the troopers turned theirbacks.A policeman, state dry agents charge, lfl the “bootleg king’* of the city, takes Ms orders over police station phones and often delivers the goods in a patrol wagonThe mayor. Peter C. Jezewski ordered by Governor Groesbeck to resign, dared the executive to throw him out.The mayor promised the governor he would clean up the town. He did. He ordered the street department, not the police, to do the cleaning. All the streets and alleys were made splc and span.WINE IN SCHOOLS—Police headquarters, state officials insist, is the biggest liquor clearing house in the city. If true that’s saying a lot. For there are 3000 places in Hamtramck where one can get his thirst quenched.Bottles of wine and beer have been found in the school children’s lunch baskets. The kiddies dip* ped their bread in it at noon.And Hamtramck's “red light’* district runs wide open—or did before the governor and state police stepped in.Just before that 100 married women took matters Into their own hands. Like the crusaders of old. they stormed the dives and dragged out the women habituesby the hair of their heads.STATE RULES NOW—Now the state troopers have assumed charge of things. But State Safety Commissioner Jackson, who's directing their operations makes this significant announcement:“The liquor laws cannot be enforced in Hamtramck.”Meanwhile. Governor Groes-beek has given Mayor Jezewski another chance. The mayor has promised to clean up the town in 90 days.
