The action of Policeman Lewis in preferring charges against another policeman for sleeping while on duty after he himself had been dismissed from the force for the offense reminds Man About To wn of an incident several years ago. A policeman who was not standing in with the headquarters clique was sus pended for loitering and a “pet” took his beat. The next night the favoriteslept f r an hour and a half in full view of all who passed the place where he was snoozing but no charge was preferred against him. I don’t know whether I made the prediction in this column recently when the men were told they must again consider that they were expected to perform their duty that several policemen would soon be removed from the force on one pretext or another. More are yet to go. I do not mean to offer excuses for any dereliction of duty by public officials but I do mean that it will bo found that none of the guilty who have stood in with the -clique will he called before the board. lt;If the dismissal of men who have not catered to the powers-that be Is for the ' good of the service why not dismiss i them on that ground? lt;
