The StateMedicaid Fraud Trial BeginsRICHMOND (UPI — A jury of nine men and three women were selected to hear the Medicare and Medicaid fraud trial of Roanoke area physician Dr. Richard M. Vaughan which began Monday in U.S. District Court.A former Vaughan employee testified she had been instructed to list as many “procedures” as possible for each medical routine performed in the physician’s clinic in order to claim as many Medicare or Modicaid payments as possible.Former employee Ginger Shannon also said she was instructed to list prescription refills for Medicaid or Medicare patients as actual office visits in order to collect federal reimbursement.Early in the trial before Judge Robert R. Merhige Jr., two felony and five misdemeanor charges against Vaughan were dropped.* The TroutviUe physician still faces 18 felony charges for mail fraud.
