— John Lon?, of Elkhart county, having had numerous quarrels with his neighbors, and made frequent threats of shooting, a surety of the peace warrant was Issued and placed in the hands of Constable Hawkins, of Benton township, for service. Lsst Saturdav Hawkins, ac compaulea by two or three citizens, proceeded to Long's bou«e to arrest him. While parleying for admittance at the front door, a man stepped around the corner of the house unper* celved and fire 1 a gun at Hawkins, the bullet •triking him in the bowe’s and lodging in the •pine. He was alive at last report, but no hope was entertained of his recovery. Although Long denies having fired the fatal shot, it is blleved be did it, notwithstanding there several other persons in the house with him. He is in jail at Goshen, having been arrestedby the 8herifi the fame day. ■»«
