Chesimard Convicted, Sentenced To LifeNEW BRUNSWICK. N.J. (UPI) — Joanne Chesimard,known as “the soul of the Black Liberation Army,” was convicted on all counts Friday in the slaying of a state policeman in a 1973 gun battle on the New Jersey Turnpike. She was sentenced to life inprison.Mrs. Chesimard, 29, wascharged with murder and assault in connection with thedeaths of state trooper Werner Foerster and of Janies Costan, her companion, during the May, 1973, shootout near New Brunswick. She also was charged with woundingmandatory life prison term for the Foerster killing. Sentencing on the other counts was delayed for a posbtrialstudy.Mrs. Chesimard’s defense lawyers said they would appeal the verdict by the all-white Jury.After the verdict was read, Superior Court JudgeTheodore Appleby ordered guards to escort Mrs. Chesimard from the courtroom and take her back to her cell.‘'The prisoner will walk out,” said Mrs. Chesimard asviolation.
