The Sheriff went to Long’s house, and left the impression that no one had been hurt, that it was all a ruse, and the family conveyed the same to Long, and in a short time he returned to the house. Soon afterward Egbert reappeared and persuaded Long that he ought to have the men who had been disturbing him arrested, and thereupon Long accompanied the Sheriff to the Justice’s oflice at the village of Benton, where the handcuffs, most unexpectedly to Long, were slipped on his wrists, and he was brought to Goshen, breathing; murder and vengeanceo ^asrainst all that had assisted in his capture. He is a desperate fellow, and killed his man in Ohio before coming; here to live.
