Former chairman of Kirkhill Rubber diesOBITUARY: William J. Haney, who was 87, had worked 61 years for the Brea company, starting as a clerk.By ANDI ATWATERThe Orange County RegisterFULLERTON — Funeral services for William J. Haney, a former company president and longtime Kirkhill Rubber Co. employee, will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Memory Garden Memorial Park and Mortuary in Brea.Mr. Haney, 87, died Tuesday after a 61-year career with the Brea-based rubber manufacturer. He was hired as a shipping clerk in 1929 and moved through the ranks into management. Mr. Haney became company president in 1953 and chairman of theboard in 1978. He was chairman of the board emeritus when he died.“He made people very comfortable around him,” said Eileen Novotny, Mr. Haney’s assistant for 22 years. “He had an open-door policy and cared about everyone. He could be talking with the president of the United States one minute and the next attending a regular employee’s wedding or birthday party.”Mr. Haney was a 40-year trustee at Chapman University. He also was director of the Merchants and Manufacturers Association and was recognized with numerous industry awards.Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at McAulay Wallace Mortuary in Fullerton.He is survived by his wife, Georgia; daughter, Suzanne Foster of Rhode Island; son, Ste-WILLIAM J. HANEY:The rubber manufacturing executive started at Kirkhill in 1929 as a shipping clerk. He was a 40-year trustee at Chapman University.phen, of Norco; stepdaughter, Debra Willard of Placentia; stepson, Michael Willard of Newport Beach; sister, Martha Babbitt of Rolling Hills; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
