Brannon said Thursday it was “miraculous” that he was only allowed to sentence two men to 10 years in prison for shooting a Trent Court man in October andleaving him paralyzed.“It is fair to say that my view ofthe evidence is considerably different from the 12 that came out of the jury room,” Brannon said gruffly before he sentenced Ronald Moore, 24, of Cedar Ridge Lane, Havelock, and Eric Vandiver, 27, of Brooklyn, N.Y., to 10 years in state prison, the maximum sentence the jury’s verdict allowed.Speaking to the defense attorneys in Craven County Superior Court, Brannon said, “Your job here hasbeen miraculous.”The jury convicted Moore and Vandiver of assault with a deadly weapon iflicting serious injury, but acquitted them of conspiracy to commit murder and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with intent to kill. The latter crimes carry maximum prison terms of 30- and20-years, respectively.•The man they were convicted of shooting was Michael Sean Downing* 20, of M-120 Trent Court. One of Moore's bullet’s shattered Downing’s spinal column.The verdict means that after seven hours of deliberation, the jury decided Moore intended to shoot Downing without killing him.
