VOLUME 65.FAMILY SLAINv.Father, Mother and three Children i Found Murdered to San Antonio—• Heads of AM Were Battered ■ With an Axe.; : San Antonio, Tex., March 22.—Louis Cassaway,'negro. his wife and three ‘•children’ two girls, 6, and 3 years or age, and a boy 5 months, were found •dead In bed at their home on Olive .Street this morning.• • Their heads were battered 'in and •near; the . body was found a bloody axe with which-the work was done. M happened some time during the *;flight '■'There is no clue to Llie murderer.- Cass away and one of the children •were in one bed and his wife and two •children In another. \Cassaway's wife is said by some to hare been a wbiie woman. When ‘ the oflicers entered . the -house the sight beture them caused every on^ to hesitate as they stepped into the front room. With his head• crushed in Cassaway ami his little daughter, Louise, lay upon the bed-Life had been extinct several hours. In the room adjoining lay the wife and mother, her five-montlis-old babe and other child, Jusie. each with their bond hntforafl In. /.The .woman- and the two child ron slept in the room on the north side of the house. She was lying on her back near the edge, or the bed. Lying to Her right and near the brousv- was the infant,; its tiny little head fearfully crushed. The body of Jo.3le was found at the loot of the bed. resting on her mother's EeeL The top of, the head was crushed. •Cassaway’s wile was . the most disfigured of the family and had unquestionably been struck more than one• blow with the blunt end of the axe. The entire top Qf the head and upper portion of the face extending to the eyes, had been beaten iuto an unrecognisable mass. The husband, who occupied the, south ruoin with Ihc 3-. year-old daughter, was found lying face downward. The body of Louisa was found lying, alongside the father•with her head pointing toward the.,* lt;. . • . ,loot of the bed. * ' •' Thu wall near the' head of Mrs.room indicated*.that the murderer was In no hurry to leave. In each hilling the . blunt end of the'Uxe had been used. ’ ■ . .For ii time the oflicers were completely baffled. There was absolutely nothing foutid in the house that might tend to give a clue. The axe used in the commission of the crime may yet furnish a clue, as no one present at the place today could definitely tell whether it was owned by Louis Cassn-wav. It is believed, however, that the axe did belong to him. ■ That robbery was uot the motive, the oflicers say. Is home out by. the fact that nothing in the house-was molested. Not a drawer iu a bureau or wardrobe was found disturbed. The trousers of Louis Cassaway were still hanging on the foot or the bed and several 'dollars were in the pockets. His watch was still-in the vest. The most plausible information gained by Ure officers is that tending to Urn belief that revenge prompted the wholesale slaughter. The fact; that a negro woman, named Drake, went to the home of Louis Cas-eaway last night and got her child doubtless saved the little one's life. This child had been playing with the Cassaway children during the hitter part of the afternoon and sometin^ea remained over night at the house. There is no question In the minds of tho police that had the child been left there it would have met the same fate as the others. 1Louis Cassaway came to Sun Antonio from New Orleans; about thirty-five years ago and was widely known In the city, both among the whites and negroes. Ills wife, according to the detectives, was u white woman and came here some icn yeara ago fromtiallettBville. She was married toLouis Cassaway in Mexico and returned uml Jived continuously in this city. Having slain the motherand the two children, the murderer Is thought to have returned to the room Wherein Louis Cassaway was killed. -. :.'The position of the body of'this child is what leads them to believe that she was the last of the victims. •The body was found with her head Ijolntlng to the foot of the bed. No blood stain is found upon the pillow where it had gone to sleep earlier in the oight. The officers believe that this child was awakened during the progress of the several killings and had started to get out of bed or wasin an upright position when struckdown with the axe. The skull of this child was the only one that was not laid open. It was within two or three feet from where this child lay that the axe was found on. the floor. That the person who committed the crime was deliberate io his fearful work of slaughter is shown by the condition of things found upon the arrival of the officers. The face3 of Louis Cassaway ^and his wife were found covered with a clotb. In the window near which Louis Cassaway lay a pillow had been placed. A pillow also was found in the window near the head of the woman and a blanket had been^pread .across the north win* dow of this room. Josie Cassaway was killed while lying on the bed nearest the wall of the north room, as shown by the blood at that spot. Tho body, however, had been picked up and afterwards thrown near the foot of the bed, the head'being bent farback aa waa tho larger portion of thobody.
