Cassaway and one of the children were In one bed and his wife and two •children in auother.Cassaway's wife is said by some to have'becn a white woman.; When • the officers entered . thehouse the sight before them causedevery un^-to hesitate as they stepped Into the front room. With his head crushed in Cassaway anil his IlttJc daughter, Louise, lay upon the bed-Life had been extinct several hours. Jn the room adjoining lay the wife and mother, her five-Hiontbs-old babe and other child, Jusie. each with their head ha 1. to rod In. /.The woman and the two children slept in the room on the north side of the house. She was lying on her back near the edge, ol' the^bed. Lying to Her right and near the breast- was the Infant,; its tiny little head fearfully crushed. The body of Jci.sle was found at the foot of the bed. resting on her mother's feet. The top of/the head was crusbrd.Casea way’s wife was. the most disfigured of the family anil had unquestionably been struck more than one blow with the blunt end of the axe. The entire top qf the head and upper portion of the face extending to the .eyes, bad been beaten into an unrecognizable ijjatjs. Tiie husband, who occupied . the south • ruoui with I ho 3-year-old daughter, was found lying face downward. The body of Louise was found lying alongside the father ■with her head pointing toward the loot of the bed.The wall near the head of-Mrs. Cassaway was bespattered with *blood where it had splashed when tho axe was doubtiess repeatedly 'brought down upon the head of tho woman. On the wail at the head of the bed occupied by Louise Cassaway was also blood spolSi but not in such quantity us that found near the head of his wife. : . '. ..The theory of the officers is that Louis Cassaway was the first victim pf. the, intruder. Having killed him, room indicated that the murderer was In no hurry to leave* In each hilling the.blunt eud of tbevnxe had been used. • ■ 'f‘%-vFor n time the officers were completely bellied. There was absolutely nothing found in the house that might tend to give a clue. The axe used in the commission of the crime may yet furnish a clue, as no one present at the place toduy could definitely tell whether It was owned by Louis Cassaway. It is believed, however, that the axe did belong to hint. That robbery was not the motive, the officers say, is borne out by. tho fact thal nothing in the house was molested. Not a drawer In a bureau or wardrobe was found disturbed. The trousers ot Louis Cassaway were still hanging on the foot of the bed and several dollars were in the pockeLs. His watch was still In the vest. The most plausible Information gained by tire officers is thatjendmg to Urn belief that revenge prompted the wholesale slaughter. The fact ’thata negro woman, named Drake, went to the borne of l^ouls Cas-aaway last night and got her child doubtless saved the little one’s life. This child had been playing with the Cassaway children during the latter part of the afternoon and sometimes remained over night at the house. There is no question In the minds of the -police that had the child been left there it would have met the same fate as the others. 1Louis Cassaway came to Sun Antonio from New Orleans about thirty-five years ago and was widely known In the city, both among the whites and negroes. Tils wife, according ro the detectives, was u white woman and came here some Ion years ago from UallettBville. She was married to Louis Cassaway Id Mexico und returned utkl lived continuously In this city. For about six or seven years Casa away ha3 been employed as janitor at the Grant negro school here.Justice of the Peace Ben Fisk will not complete bis inquest Tor several days.
