sured of a pleasant time.NO SKELETON FOUND AS WAS EXPECTED.The supposed human bones found in grading Adams street cannot be the remains of Joshua Barton, who was burial in Square 67. In the first place these bones were found on Adams street, and secondly at a depth | lower than the ordinary grave, lieing | some 10 or 12 feet below the present grade of the hill which grade is much lower than the original grade of the hill, at the time Barton was buried. From the early history of the town we learn that Joshua Barton was buried on the hill in Square 67 near the old stone fort or wind mill which stood about the middle of the squareton a line due east of the present residence of Mrs. Orme, and Barton’s grave was a little to northeast of the mill. Just what year this occurred is not stated. However onJuly 9, 1853, the Board of Curators of St. Charles College con-, veyed to Archibald Gamble, Edward Bates and Win. G. Betters 100 square feet of ground in Square 67 the center of which was the grave of Joshua Barton. This conveyance was made for the purpose of enabling Gamble, Bates and Fetters to erect on said grave a suitable monument to the memory of Barton. This however was never done and whether the body was ever exhumed and re-interred at another place we do not know. The late Joseph II. Alexander who was well acquainted with early history of St. Charles, in an interview ou the subject, given shortly before his death, seemed to be of the | opinion^ that the remains of Barton j.liad been removed many years ago.“The skeleton” turned out to be only a small piece of a bone, and whether it was a human bone or not is yet undecided. This morning when the graders plowed over the ground again and went deeper it was thought other bones would be found but such was not the case.Later—Hon. T. F. McDearmonstates that Barton’s remains were exhumed ami removed to another place.
