Travis County attorney post waiting in limboJay BridaDaily Texan StaffThe Travis County attorney's job should be up for grabs in November, as possible replacements for the position are gearing up their campaigns to succeed current attorney Ken Oden. But for Oden and his possible successors, Austin attorney David Van Os and Assistant District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg, bothDemocrats, this has not been a normal campaign.Oden was nominated for the post of U.S. attorney for the Western District by former Sen. Bob Krueger. But Krueger was routed in a special election by Kay Bailey Hutchison, an event that began Oden's confirmation problems.Last month, Hutchison and U.S. Sen. Phil Gramm, both Republicans, opposed Oden's nomination, calling Oden too political to be a fair attorney.WTiile speculation runs rampant as to why the Texas senators would go so public to oppose the lower level political appointment, Van Os, who needs Oden to be confirmed before he can be an official candidate, said the whole episode is ridiculous. That's absolutely ludicrous for politicians to accuse a political appointee of being political, Van Os said at a would-be campaign fund-raiser Sunday. Some say that Hutchison's recent run-in with Travis County District Attorney RonaieEarle, which ended in her acquittal on all charges of misusing state time and a subsequent cover-up, soured her on Oden.During her legal ordeal, Hutchison wanted to move the trial out of Travis County, saying that she could not get a fair trial in such a liberal county.Hutchison also accused Earle and the Democrats of running a political attack against her to sabotage her 1994 re-electionPlease see Attorney, page 2
