Bonds lowered for suspects in coed kidnapingMINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (AP) — The bonds for a college professor and student accused of kidnaping a Purdue Universitycoed were reduced Wednesday after a hearing at which the government said the woman had been given electrical shocks as part of an “experiment.”U.S. Magistrate J. Earl Cudd lowered bond to $50,000 lor Thomas R. Lippert, 25, a former assistant professor of business administration at Southwest State College, Marshall, Minn., and to $1G,00Q for Harold R. Tenneson, 21, a junior at the college.Those were the original amounts set for Lippert, of New Ulm. Minn., and Tenneson, of Burnsville, Minnl, at their arraignment Friday. But Cudd had raised the bonds to $150,000 for each defendant after he received new information on the case Saturday.Lippert, now suspended from his teaching position, and Tenneson are charged with kidnaping Susan Wells Cochran, 2X), Little Falls, N.J. The woman allegedly was abducted from the Purdue campus at I ^Fayette, Ind., on Feb. 19; she was found on the Southwest State campus March 13.At today's bond reduction hearing, U.S. Atty. Thor Anderson argued against lowering bail. He said Miss Cochran said she had been given electrical shocks after being taken to the basement of a New Ulm home, forced to undress and get into awooden box for about an hour as part of an experiment by I jppert to make her love him.Miss Cochran had told authorities that, after she advertised for a ride to Boston, two men in a car picked her up at her sorority house at Lafayette. But instead of going to Boston, she said, they produced weapons, forced her to drink whisky and took her to New Ulm.As part of the bond provision, Cudd said if the two are released they must report daily by phone to (he U.S. Marshal's office at Minneapolis, and they are not to contact directly or indirectly Miss Cochran.Lippert’s attorney, Undsay Arthur Jr., asked that bond be reduced to $25,000, saying he was confident Lippert would make good on any scheduled court appearance.Arthur said the young woman was not harmed nor was there any ransom demanded, and that she had had several opportunities to notify authorities in the Marshall and New Ulm areas before the FBI discovered her.The attorney *said Lippert’s parents, of New Ubn, wore having trouble raising bond of $50,000.Attorney James Trench also asked lower bond for Tenneson, “who I have every reason to believe will make his court appearances.Counsel for both men said they planned to stay at their parents’ homes, if released, pending further hearings.
