San Jose, March 18th. — Wednesday evening Vasquez made a long statement, which he dedicated and addressed to society and his former associates. He still claims that he was never guilty of murder, and fastens the guilt of the murders at Tres Pinos on Leiva and Gonzales. Last night he was shown his coffin, when iie remarked, “That’s way up.” He continues apparently cool and unconcerned.Yesterday a man named Thomas H. Cushing, an employee of the P. M. 8. S. Co., while swimming in the bay near Hunter’s Point, was observed to throw up his hands and sink. The body has not yet been recovered.% * I ---Exit Tiburcio Vasqiiez.San Jose, March 19.—2. p. m.—Ti-burcio Vasquez has just paid the extreme penalty of ihe law for hiscrimes. lie approached the scaffold and ascended the steps unflinchingly and stood with the utmost composure and iron nerve throughout the painful ordeal of preparation for the ghastly ceremony. He denied to the last that he died with blood upon his hands, and evinced a spirit to the very end worthy of a more honorable fate. After the black cap had been drawn over his face, the spring clicked and he fell through the trap. As the rope tautened and his body straightened out, ther* was a slight quivering and twisting, but nothing more. The jail yard was filled with people and the horrid spectacle was witnessed by a great crowd.
