ERIE — Erie County Coroner Merle Wood said last night he would wait until today to rule on the death of an infant found in a grocery bag yesterday. Wood will confer with District At torney Robert Chase and Deputy Erie police Chief Jack Cousins at 11 a.m. to day Speculation is the death could be rul ed a homicide after the results of the in vestigation are analyzed. The white male infant was found at 12:30 p.m. yesterday in front of a home on the city's eastside. Deputy Chief Cousins said Victor Siin of Erie found the dead baby in the grocery bag when he went to get his mail. ‘A towel covered the body, Cousins reported, and about 10 inches of um bilical cord remained attached to the ody. Wood said the body was taken to Hamot Medical Center where an autop sy was performed. ‘The six-pound baby appeared to be fully developed Wood said, and there was “air in the lungs’? — meaning the baby was apparently alive at birth. Police Chief Sam Gemelli said the case would be tough to solve and police will need assistance from the communi ty. Our main concern is why it happened, the upset Gemelli said. “If it was done without any reason then it was pretty damn low. But we don't know the circumstances yet. “T urge the people of the community to help us find the mother. There is a good chance she needs medical atten tion,” Cousins said the immediate vicinity where the body was found was can vassed by police for clues. The only bit of evidence turned up was that the bag was seen in front of the home at about 8 a.m., and Cousins speculated it was probably placed there during the night. He reiterated what Gemelli said con cerning the incident; “Somewhere there is a girl who was pregnant and now she isn't and she doesn't have the baby either. We'll need a tip from the community to help us. Cousins added, ‘We'll be checking all the hospital emergency rooms and maybe something will tin up.”” A similar incident remains unsolved from 1974, when the body of a dead baby was found in a shopping bag here on April 4. Wood ruled that baby had lived a short time and was born about two months premature.
