(AP) — Wll-Uam Schmidt, 30, Menomonie, who la married and the father of one child, pleaded guilty Mon-day In Circuit Court her# to as-sault with intent to rape an unconscious patient at Memorial Hospital in Menomonle.Judge Kenneth White committed Schmidt to Central State Hospital at Waupun for 60 days of psychiatric observation.Schmidt, employed as a Janitor at Memorial Hospital for the past three years, allegedly tried to rape a woman brought In unconscious after an accident. He had volunteered to sit with the patient when the regular nursewas called away by an emergency.One of three other patients In the room observed the Incident but did not reveal the circum-stances until about a week ago when word of the matter reached the hospital board and later the district attorney at Me-nomonie. Schmidt denied the charge and agreed to tajce a lie|r detector test in order to clear * his name, but volunteered a confession as the test was about to begin.Authorities withheld other details in order to preserve the unawareness of the victim on whom the assault was attempted.t
