Property In Alleged Swindle la Rightful Hands AgainSHOWS SETTLEMENTIN SENSATIONAL CASEFarm In Casa Township, Sold by Mrs. Mary DcWolfe to Lincoln, III., Parties, For Which She Alleges She ' Received a Lot of Valueless Papers*Is Deeded Back to Her.The recording of two deeds In the office of County Recorder McCurdy Indicate that there has been a settlement in the suit brought in LaPorte circuit court by Mrs. Mary DeWolfe against C. H. Lovewell, Halliwell Marshall, Mary Marshall, Charles I. Will and Alvah Stephens, for the recovery of several farms in LaPorte and Porter counties, valued at $12,000, which it was alleged the plaintiff had been defrauded out of by the defendants. The story of this alleged clever conspiracy were first told in The Herald on Feb. 25.It will be recalled that the defendants agreed to purchase of Mrs. De-Wolfe 200 acres in Porter county and 83.72 acres in Cass township, LaPorte county, and when she deeded the property to them she received notes and a mortgage on land In Missouri for $7,000 and a mortgage on her own land for 95,000. After the transaction had been closed, the plaintiff averred that not oniy were the notes and mortgage on the Missouri land valueless but also the notes and mortgage on her own property. She was minus her farms and had absolutely nothing to show for it excepting some valueless papers. The suit followed. One of the deeds, just filed, is given by HUfweli Marshall and Mary Marshall to Mary A. DeWolfe and covers the 80 acres in section 19 in Cass township. The consideration is $1 and“other valuable consideration.” The second, a quit .claim deed, covers the same tract and Is given by Charles I. Will, as trustee for Halliwell and Mary Marshall, the consideration being the same. This Is to clear the title to the land.Information obtained from Lincoln, 111., is to the effect that some of ihff defendants in this case have been mixed up in previous deals that upon investigation might not stand the light of day. Lovewell has been in the Missouri land business before, while Marshall was at one time ^* wprosperous plumber, but he is not In . business now and judgments - against . him have not been uncommon in Lta-t coin county. If, as indicated by the , papers filed, the defendants in the \ suit have become frightened and re-*, turned the land to Mrs. DeWolfe, she I can, from all accounts of the men and . their doings, congratulate herself thatashe has escaped so well.COMMISSIONERS COURT.
