Arrests follow series of tipsKANSAS CITY (AP) - A series of tips last week led to the weekend arrests of two men accused in last month’s slaying of a Gas Service Company employe, according to detectives working on the case.Detectives Joseph R. McCune and William E. Frazier said a phone call from an informant led to a series of tips that resulted in the arrest of Samuel Duncan and Steven Williams.Duncan, 19, and Williams, 18, were arraigned Saturday on charges of capital murder in the Feb. 19 slaying of Charles R. Brownfield, 53. Brownfield was found on the city's eastside, slumped in the seat of his Gas Service Company van, shot twice in the left side.Brownfield, an employe of the company 29 years, was making a routine service call in the neighborhood when he was slain.“As far as we know, there was no resistance on Brownfield’s part, McCune said. “He didn’t fight. The motive was not robbery. It was just a totally senseless death.”Frazier said he did not knowwhat would be done with a $10,-000 reward offered by the Gas Service Company and the Gas Workers Union Local No. 781.
