Ind.. have been j indicted by a federal grand jury chart?- \ed with using the United States mailsin a scheme to defraud.The indictments were returned on .March 3rd and were suppressed by Fed era 1 Judge Carpenter under warrantscould be served by the United Statesmarshal. _ t ,The indictments name the officials orthe National Organization Company, itis declared, the principals being E. C.Talmadge. George DeWitt Talmadge,Nellie Burnside Talmadge and J- U.Brokelbank. •It was stated today at the Federal tbuilding in Chicago, that the officials ; of the National Organization Company knew of the indictments Rnd had sentword they would appear at the federal building and give bond. jE. C. Talmadge and a number of the associates were indicted In 1H on a similar charge but the case never cameto trial.The National Organization Company had offices at 1*3 W. Washington street and at one time maintained a branch office in Hammond. The company was investigated by the United States Postal Inspectors Walter Johnson and C jH. Clarahan who told the federal grand jury that it was not a legitimate business firm but a scheme to defraud. Postal inspectors raided the offices of thecompany and presented correspondenceand record* to the grand jury that the National Organization concern accepted fees on contracts they were neverable to carry out.According to the postal inspectorsthe company represented itself as abrokerage for stock companies. The J victims It sought were young companies anxious io get thei*-atwek on the market and disposed of and the National Organization Company wouldcontract to sell the stock, exacting substantial fees in advance.There is no evidence that the National Organization Company ever sold one share of anybody s stock. saidain inspector. “But they fleeced scores f companies in all parts of the coun-ry.”The Talmadges and Brokelbank are•ell known in Tak* county. They ipend a portion of the year at theCumberland Country Club on the[ankakee river.
