A BRUTAL CRIME.From Colbert. Okla., comes a story one of the moat brutal crimes I 1 brought to light in this section in re- is lt;cent years, together with the extreme onl physical endurance of a negro woman, vet says the Denison Herald. ofYoung Cummings, a negro farmer folresiding near Colbert, was insanely pn jealous of his wife. For many montns ma she stood his over-bearing attitude wa toward her and then ran away, com-! the ing to Texas. He promised to treat out her better, however, and she returned wo to him. Hut his promise was not kept An and one day a short time ago shelsll again decided to leave his home. I on Hastily packing her few things in a it bundle she hastened to me railway I wa station in Colbert and was about tolbil board a train when her husband ar-l I rived and forced her to returrt to the se« home with him. Then he informed cei his wife that he was going to kill her cuand asked her in which particular fat manner she wished to die. Her plead-jcrt ings for her life fell on deaf ears. He I me forced her to accompany him to the th« woods nearby, where he halted and. I coi pulling his pistol, shot her between I tinthe eyes, the bullet ranging down- no ward and coming out in her moum. |**nThen he placed the gun to th»* side be of her face and fired again, tearing I de away a large portion of her jaw. Thejthi wounds seemed to have little efTect, I prlt; thp woman no’ even falling. P®Her failure to fall seemed to enrage) se her black husband and he demanded of her if she did not intend to lay down and die. Then he took the buttlga end of his gun and dealt her several | to blows on the head, causing her to fall in a heap After being knocked down she asked for a drink of wafer. He) eh replied that she could not have any J SI water. thaf she must go on and di° and that pretty quick, too. In her pleadings she ask»*d him to glt;*t a doc-| w tor. To this he r piled that he would | 11 not and then, stooping down, placed his gun close to her breast and fired. Then he covered her with some J If leaves and. striking a match, attempt- j fr ed to burn her to death. I’.ut the leaves were wet and would not ignite. He then returned to the house to get some kerosene with which to saturate the body and leaves. Tne oil can was empty and he hurriedly across the field to his father's home.) . hoping to procure some oil there. In the meantime the wounded woman had recovered sufficiently to crawd to the house and was there when he returned with the oil. Again she pleaded for water and begged that J . her life be spared. He told her no and made preparations to burn the house, intending to tie her to the bedThe negro's father, suspecting that I. something was wrong, followed his son and when he arrived at the little home the son told him that a white man had assaulted his wife and then shot her, the woman, in her fears, verifying, her husband's statements.A physician was summoned and to him the same story was related. Several days later the true story became known and the negro was arrested. At a preliminary hearftig on a charge of assault to kill before Justice of the Peace Hadgett, his bond was placed a! $5,000.Strange to relate the negro woman Is still alive and the Indications areII that, she will recover, despite ihe fact I that any one of the wounds would oe jfatal to the average person.¥f
