COAST JURY HEARS CONFLICTING STORIES(By AmmIiUI Pt«mGULFPORT, Miss., March 14.—The jury today had conflictingstatements before them in testimony taken on a damage suit filed against Sheriff O. L. Meador, ofHarrison county and his bondsmen by Elliot Shaw, a young farmer who alleged that he was beaten in “third degree” measures by two New Orleans detectives.Shaw took the stand and testifiedthat John Grosch chief of New Orleans detectives and another New Orleans detective unnamed, beat I him in September, 1933, in the Harrison county jail in their third degree” attempt to get him to confess as a suspect in robberies on the coast in which Shaw was later freed of blame.But this testimony was contradicted by Sheriff Meador on the stand. Meador dpiied the alleged beating. He testified that he \tfas not present during the questioning of Shaw and left word with his deputies that there should be “no third degree” methods used.
