AND IS JAILED IN DANIEL CASEMonroe Planter Surrenders to Face Charge in Kitting of Deputy.FOLLOWED LIQUOR RAIDFatal Shooting Occurs As Two Officers Find Rum Stock on Place.(Special to Tit* News-Itom.l MONROEVILLE, Ala., March 12-Ed Peavy, 53-ycar-old former of th« Mount Pleasant section, shout 38 mile* south of this town, surrendered about 9 o’clock Thursday morning to George Scott, 38, a planter, for the slaying late Wednesday afternoon of John Daniel, deputy sheriff of Monroe county, as the latter and other officer* were leaving Peavy*a home where a raid is reported to have netted a supply of liquor.Peavy, object of an all-night search by a posse and bloodhounds, was placed in the Monroeville prison but no formal charge had been filed up to late Thursday morning.Spends Night In Mldlng. Escaping from the scene of the shooting after grabbing Daniels' gun, Peavy spent the night hiding in a negro settlement In Mount Pleasant. Early Thursday morning he sent one of the negroes to summon Scott, termed by Peavy as his lifetime friend. Scott visited the scene and found the accused killer.“He had Daniels’ 'gun and told me he was going to kill every one that tried to capture him,” Peavy was quoted by Scott as declaring. Scott said he advised P avy the best thing would be to give up. It was at this point that Peavy decided to surrender. Scott declared.Shooting Follow* Raid.The shooting occurred™ m Daniel _ and Elliott Sawyer, a son of Sheriff Sawyer and also a deputy# were leaving Peavy’s house after the raid which, the younger Sawyer declared, netted a supply of liquor. ^As the pair came out of the house, Sawyer states, Peavy faced them, armed with a double barreled shotgun. Daniel Informed Peavy he was under arrest on a liquor charge. Peavy, it is claimed, raised hi* gun and fired both barrels point blank at the deputy, one load taking effect In the head and the other in the heart.Daniel died Instantly, his companion said. Peavy fled Immediately aftfcr the shooting.Daniel was appointed to office last January when Sheriff Sawyer took office. He has made a reputation since a* a fearless officer.
