Letter to the editorlt; n lt;A couple of years ago I needed a new truck since my|mg out I heard that Arnett LiUey wanted to sell his sowanted for it ami Ms priceso 1 bought it Man, it took me three or four weeks to get thattruck to go over twenty-five miles an hour. Judge LiUey, as I call him is not famous for fast driving and drivers who know cuss their luck when they get behind him on the road. And don't dare pass him We!!, that’s been a good truck but I have kidded him a lot about it. and this helped me to know him ;t. even though I first met him some thirty years ago. He's in law enforcement from w ay back in the thirties w hen he as constable of Precinct Two in San vears later he took over the Sheriff's o . who later passed on. and stayedBack then the Sheiff ran it alHtax office and acounty departments Well, the Judge said not too long after-went to Angteton temporarily but wound up staying4 years Even served as Chief of Police in Velasco for a ?n came on back to Shepherd where he was born was constable until 1962 when he ran for Justice ofElmore and won. Collia Everett was ap-then and sometime later the Judge's son, know and love, was elected constable andJ.C Hon had some humdrum times and has also happenstances. He has gone after some but has never called for a bat k m officer asHe knows right off when a suspect is suspect knows when an officer is is eye off a man he is about to he can pretty well tell what that guy never gone after a man but what he never gets more than a few feet awayneeds it he is never afraid to use it, le things like driving a school docile work back in those days, his hours are rarely his own. He has man a night to hold an inquest at a shooting, drowning, or auto death And he has got out of bed many aas also*AstNow I said back there that the Judge is a slow driver Well, there have been a few times when he needed to get to an emergency quick and he opened his siren and passed all other officers. The Judge is one of the few with whom I have been friendly who is not only older than I am and admits it, he bragsabout it. Judge lulley has always been a crack shot, at least inhis younger years. But time slwos us all down and the Judgefound it out the hard way. It was his delight to grab a chickensnake by the tail and pop it’s head off But that too, becamepart of yesterday. One day about that time he found a chickensnake in one of his nests and he grabbed a shotgun and blasted at it. I still don’t know if he killed the snake but he did get three* J ■The judge is seventy-four now and stll J.P He has that same fire in his eyes he’s always had and is not thinking of retiring. He still gets up at all hours to take care of his job He’s a small man, maybe don’t weigh a hundred pounds sopping wet, but when trouble comes, he’s a man to want on your side. I sure do.He can tell you some hair-raising tales but prefers to go quietlyabout his work He is an officer from the old school and I justwish we had more like him today. Our world would be a betterlliippitgk 'Tom W. Wilson*i*k«**-
