Crowds | swarm tbe streets and the detectives have been advised to leave tbe city to avoid injury. They attempted to seareh the suit case of Albert Smith, whom the detectives accused of bootlegging. Smith resisted and was bad- j 1 ly beaten up. The detectives were j arrested for assault with intent to j kill and a mob of several hundred formed, which afaeked them as they were taken to police court. One ofthem was struck in the face and immediately drew a revolver, which caused the mob to fall back. jThey were bound over to the grand s Jury, gave bail and were released. The 1 mob followed them to their hotel and was kept at bay by the detectives' revolvers.
