Brewer jury still deliberatingTALLADEGA - The jury in the embezzlement trial of former Talladega County Sheriff Luke Brewer is expected to reach a decision today after receiving the case Friday and deliberating four hours before retiring Special Circuit Court Judge L S Moore, before sending the jury' of 10 men and two women to deliberate, charged them on points of law for an hour Judge Moore told the jurorsthey would decide onlyBrewer s innocence or guilt in the embezzlement charge He said if a guilty verdict was returned, it would be up to thecourt to impose sentence Brewer could face a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment if convicted The jury came back into the courtroom several minutes after retiring and the foreman told Judge Moore that one of the jurors had two questions One dealt with the possibility of seeing some lifts of vehicle identification numbers i VDNI taken from a car Brewer was alleged to have embezzled and the juror also asked to see the car Judge Moore said the case had been closed bv the state and«rthe defense and the jury would have to decide the case based on the evidence before them The state completed its case earlier Friday after calling itsfinal rebuttal witness. WilliamC Weir Jr of Orlando FlaJohnnv Carroll, an Atmore Prison inmate, testified hebought the car in question Weir and later gave it to Brewer as a present I Carrolls wife.
